Kyra's Dad on a roll! Force win 4-0

In contrast to last week's sluggish start, the Force wasted no time in taking control against a perhaps overconfident 1 loss BASC white team. From the opening whistle, the girls' ball control at midfield and in the back set up a quick succession of chances by our opportunistic forwards.Within the first couple of minutes, a near miss by Christina and a nice cross by Sawyer which almost found the foot of a charging Kyra had the team in red back on their heels. The sustained pressure deep in the BASC end led to some ill advised play by their keeper, who, on a subsequent goal kick, carelessly tapped it to a nearby defender. Without hesitation, Sawyer jumped the pass at the top of the box and found herself all alone against the goalie. Too easy. 1-0. And the Force were just getting warmed up. A short glance to our sideline saw Roy

filling in for coach Cookie. Clad in his orange winter coat, he looked every bit the part of a hunter, who with the help of his fine selection of weapons, is about to make quick work of his prey. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhUIea7vnfk
And quick work they did. Within a few moments, some fantastic ball control by Christina allowed her to outduel what seemed like the the entire BASC defense and deliver a perfect pass to a wide open Sawyer whose strike made it 2-0. On the occasion when the opponent attempted to cross midfield, our backfield were as sharp as ever. Rhea, Jill, Annabelle, Sophie and Sidney played with intelligence and efficiency. This might be best exemplified by a game-changing play from Annabelle. With BASC trying to mount some pressure and drive the ball deep into the Force end, she calmly gathered the ball and lofted a pass over the action at midfield to a perfect spot for Anastasia and her quickness to slice through and outrun 3 defenders. Unstoppable. 3-0. And all of this BEFORE the official start time of 5:15 (the refs started the game just after five) much to the dismay of a few late arriving parents. But not to disappoint, the girls were not done just yet. They kept the pressure on and after a torrid sequence right in front of the BASC goal, on this day who else but Sawyer, would bury a shot and give herself a hat trick. Certainly an MVP worthy performance. It seemed at this point the girls took their foot off the gas a bit, or BASC found a way to use the one advantage they had, their size, to create more opportunities. As the first half clock slowly wound down, much of the action was deep in the Force end, with BASC earning a series of corner kicks and a couple subsequent scoring chances gave the Force spectators a bit of the jitters. So thank goodness for the buzzer.

The start of half number two found coach Cookie on the sideline, who, I'm sure, certainly was impressed with the result thus far. Just a moment though, to offer on behalf of all the Force families our sincere condolences to Steve, his wife and their family on the loss of his father in law. Let us always appreciate those that we love and the time we have with them. It is with this sentiment that we continue to cheer on an incredibly special group of girls who play with such passion and energy week in and week out.

Picking up the action, once again early on the Force seized the upper hand and continued applying the pressure in the BASC end. Stellar play by midfielders Zoe and Grace created nice passing combinations, which led to some early scoring chances, like the one that Kyra almost put away but sailed just wide. Claire made her presence felt by joining in on some crisp passing sequences, giving Jazzy and Christina something to work with in front of the goal. Unfortunately though, the desperate BASC strategy of loading up the defense and out-muscling the smaller Force effectively stopped any serious threat. This technique even had it's effect on our bigger players, as Jazzy found herself on the receiving end of a hard shoulder to the cheek. Shaken, but not deterred, she stayed with the play and eventually won the ball for the Force. The physical play was not unnoticed by the refs, and some tough and fearless play by both Jill and Kyra earned penalty kicks, allowing for continued pressure in the opponent's end. And just like the first half, it was the girls in the back and at midfield that ultimately led to the success of our spirited bunch. Time and time again, they snuffed out any counter the team in red could muster. Late in the game with a four goal lead and the always strong (if not sometimes bored) Kate in goal, the outcome was never in doubt. So the girls were content to play keep away and coast to the finish, picking up another satisfying and much needed win.

United States 1, Italy 0:  Defense and Dempsey's Shot Give U.S. a First in Italy
By BRIAN SCIARETTA
Clint Dempsey scored the game's only goal Wednesday as the United States defeated Italy in an international friendly in Genoa for America's first win in 11 games over 78 years against the Azzurri.

Good interview w/Clint Dempsey and US/Italy friendly today

The interview, obviously, appeared before the USA's surprising win over Italy -1-0 -- in a "friendly" at Genoa. First US win over Italy in 82 years!

New soccer term from telecast: "result" (instead of win) -- as in this was a good "result"

Kyra's Dad comes through with Saturday game up date!

And for those of you who missed the game this past weekend, here's a quick recap of a nice 6-0 win...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvdyu0bYOL8
A 7 am whistle found the mix and match Force team sleepwalking through a bit of sloppy start as they struggled to create any offensive flow in the early minutes.

Fortunately for the girls, the 18 member RSC gold '99 squad were equally as sluggish, and before long, the attacking combination of Sawyer, Kyra and Jazzy opened up what would become an offensive barrage. Taking advantage of some undisciplined defensive play, Sawyer found a wide open Kyra whose well placed strike opened up the scoring at about the 6 minute mark. The Force never looked back. With quick pace, crisp passing and nice midfield play by Rhea and Grace, their pressure deep in the RSC end was unrelenting. Some nice ball control by Jazzy gave her the chance to strike from a tough angle in the box, which slipped through the legs of the reaching RSC keeper. What seems like moments later, the girls won a corner kick and Claire corralled the active ball and found the net for a 3-0 lead. Speaking of Claire, huge thanks to ALL the girls that filled in: Hannah, Sidney, Zoe and Claire from U-12 white, Lauren and Sam from the U-13 team. They all did a great job. Need to keep the thankyou's brief because... wait for it... SCORE! A shot from Jazzy bounces off the crossbar right to a wide open Sawyer who finessed a shot into the corner of the net. A 4-0 halftime gave coach Cookie

the chance to be a bit creative with his lineup in the second half, giving a chance for the speedy Anastasia in the back and trying defensive stalwarts such as Sophia, Jill and Annabelle in midfield and forward positions. They were all equal to the task, controlling play and keeping the ball in the RSC end for long stretches of the half. There were even a few close calls for scoring chances by our defensive dynamos. But leave it to our offensive specialists to finish out the scoring. With the talented tandem from the U-13 team in the game, Kyra crossed a pass to a streaking Lauren who would not be denied. And in the closing minutes, with an assist from Claire and Annabelle, Jazzy had the finale.

See everyone next week, thanks!
